Stillwater Real Estate

Stillwater was founded in 1843 and Stillwater real estate was named for the stillness of the water in the lake. In 1839, Joseph R. Brown was the earliest settler who came planning a townsite that he named Dahkotah. Stillwater was the county seat of St. Croix County, Wisconsin Territory and continued to be during the time that it was renamed Still Water, which was the name of the post office that was established in 1846. The post office was then taken into Minnesota Territory in 1849, then becoming the county seat of Washington County. Stillwater is the oldest county seat in the present state boundaries.

Because of the rich history of Stillwater real estate, it is also known for its finest examples of 19th-century residential architecture in the state. Many of the homes were built in the Queen Anne, Second Empire, and Stick styles of the 1800s as well as the Prairie style of the 1900s. Many of the older homes have recently been restored and made into bed and breakfasts.
